How do you select the law firm for us? What are the criteria?

We don’t. The choice is yours. Before subscribing, we will also arrange a 15-minutes Introductory Call between you and the law firm, 100% free to you, to help you decide. There are absolutely no strings.

Do you screen law firms for joining the platform?

Any law firms may apply to join our platform, but at the moment, we only accept law firms that:

have experience in supporting SMEs with a focus on commercial and business law;
have a dedicated team of lawyers to support their Zegal clients through the Lawyer Live Chat during office hours, and have undergone training for the same; and
have assigned a representative that is the principal, partner or a senior member of the law firm to oversee the performance of the Lawyer Live Chat team (which we also monitor here at Zegal).

How do you work with law firms? Do you pay them, or they pay you?

We do not pay law firms, nor do they pay us. Instead, we give lawyers powerful tools for free so they can deliver their legal support to you in an efficacious manner. We believe that by helping law firms, we are also helping law firms help you and the community of SMEs.

Then how do the law firms get paid?

The monthly fee of the Premium plan is broken into two parts: (a) Zegal’s software fee, and (b) the law firm’s fee. The law firm’s fee has nothing to do with Zegal, and is paid directly to the law firm without any deductions. Likewise no part of the software fee goes to the law firm.

Are we going to be Zegal’s client or the law firm’s client?

Both! You will be a customer of Zegal’s paying for our software, but you are given legal service by the law firm - so you are also the law firm’s client. As part of the onboarding process, you will be asked to provide KYC information and sign an engagement letter with the law firm, as you would be required to do so if you engage a law firm directly.

Is the legal advice we get insured?

As a Premium subscriber, you are also a client of the law firm’s. Law firms in most of the markets we operate in (including Hong Kong, Singapore and England and Wales) must maintain insurance policies for their legal practice. This means that any legal advice that you receive from these law firm will be covered by professional indemnity insurance maintained by them.

Can the law firm review and customise documents that we have created on Zegal?

Yes. As a Premium plan subscriber, you can enjoy preferential rates for such services from your law firm. These rates are exclusively available to Premium plan subscribers, and may be fixed fees for specific tasks, or an hourly rate that is significantly lower than what the law firm would usually charge.

To obtain the preferential rates, feel free to approach any of our sales representatives. Any fee you pay to the law firm goes directly to the law firm - none of it goes to Zegal, nor do we charge the law firm any fee for their services to you.

What if the document I need has to be drafted by the law firm?

First, make sure the document is not available on Zegal. You may check here or double-check with your Relationship Manager. If you do need your law firm to draft it for you, then the law firm can do so based on preferential rates exclusively available to Premium plan subscribers. Such preferential rates may be fixed fees for specific tasks, or an hourly rate that is significantly lower than what the law firm would usually charge.
